What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the pink? Is it cotton candy, flamingos, or bubble gum? Or is it Barbies? I’ve always liked pink – for me, it is a fun and happy color, not as much associated with Barbies or girly things. But since the announcement of the Barbie movie
release in July 2023, it took me back to childhood, and Barbie nostalgia hit me! Pink is making its comeback –
everyone everywhere is talking about Barbie! We might even call pink the new black – at least for a while!

Creating this Barbie-inspired playful pink living room interior was like returning to childhood and allowing myself to have fun! I invite you to look at this mood board as a celebration of the color pink and childlike fun, all things whimsical and maybe even a little bit out of this world! With this mood board, see how an interior would look in – at least – 50 shades of pink
Barbie doll was created in the 1960s by Mattel, and I wanted to embody the retro mood – that is so in right now – in this interior. Geometric Removable Wallpaper in custom colors
Orchid & Millennial sets the 60s mood with its graphic pattern.
In Barbieland, nothing is complicated, and I wanted to translate that feeling into this mood board. “I'm a Barbie girl in the Barbie world, life in plastic, it's fantastic,”
band Aqua sings in their song Barbie Girl
. Most furniture and decor pieces in this mood board are from plastic or imitate plastic with its simple, flowing, round shapes. The 1960s was also a time of the Space Age era, characterized by plastic or fiberglass design objects with soft curvature – an overall futuristic design for the period. All furniture in this mood board is curved and rounded to create that retro-60s-Space Age futuristic mood.
The centerpiece of this interior is the iconic Bocca Sofa created by the radical Italian design team Studio 65 back in 1972. The lip shape and hot pink color make it the perfect fit for the Barbie-inspired interior. All the lighting – Flowerpot pendants and table lamps – are a design classic from the late 1960s, created by Verner Panton. The swim blue Flowerpot pendant is a contrasting accent in the all-pink room. Bright blue is also one of the only colors besides pink in the Barbieland. Vitra's pink Panton chair is one of the best-known classics of modern furniture design. It is another iconic piece designed by Verner Panton in the 1960s. The Lulu light pink side table and the Hide round pedestal with shelving continue the retro-60s-Space Age futuristic theme.
Moooi large Ripples rug in pink with wool imitates a swimming ring and is perfect for the theme because don’t we all know that Barbie loves to be by the swimming pool? The Boa pouf in cotton candy color is also a cute reference to the swimming pool theme.
Every Barbie needs a mirror, and for this mood board, I choose a sculptural mirror in a pink frame. Finish the look with a pink retro-style poster, pink Lucia acrylic pitcher & glasses for soft drinks, and one last thing to set the mood – Barbie The Album Vinyl
with all the pink songs!
